Choosing The Right Refrigerator Water Filter

It's a common misconception that tap water is clean and safe to drink. In a perfect world, this would be the case, but this typically isn't the case. Thankfully, there are refrigerator water filters available that work to remove the harmful microorganisms, bacteria and chemicals that may cause illness. These otherwise simple devices plug directly into your refrigerator and clean the water before dispensing it into your glass or pitcher. To get the most benefit from a refrigerator water filter, though, you'll need to know how to choose the right one. The importance of water is becoming more and more talked about as new medical studies are being released each year. The human body is made up of roughly 80% water; therefore, common sense should tell you that it's a necessary element we need to survive. However, the truth is that most people walk around in a constant state of dehydration. While suffering from mild dehydration shouldn't cause any immediate health issues, prolonged dehydration can result in poor blood circulation, irregular heart palpitations, diabetes and more.

Compatibility

If you intend on using your new water filter directly with your refrigerator (recommended), then you'll need to make sure it's compatible. The fact is that not all water filters will fit every refrigerator out there. Before you go out in search of a new filter, check the instruction/owner's manual for your refrigerator to determine what filters are compatible with it. If you misplaced it, tossed it out in the trash, or can't seem to find it, call the manufacturer and ask them. Most big-name refrigerator manufacturers will be more than happy to let you know what types of water filters your specific model is compatible with.

Tips To Remember

If your refrigerator allows for it, try using a reverse osmosis water filter. These filters use an extremely porous membrane to absorb 99.9% of impurities before dispensing the water out. Now only are they effective at eliminating harmful pathogens and chemicals, but they also last longer than traditional filters. The only downside to their use is that some refrigerators (especially older models) may not be compatible with them. Because there are so many different types of refrigerator water filters out there, finding a specific one can prove to be a challenge. If you don't see the type you need at your local home improvement or appliance store, hop online and check some of the various stores and specialty shops. Who knows, you might even come away with a bargain price.
